A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE IMAGE WORKS

In 1983 photographers Alan Carey and Mark Antman created The Image Works shortly after meeting while covering a Duck Calling Contest. At the time, Alan Carey was chief photographer for a regional daily newspaper and Mark Antman had just returned to the United States after living in France for a decade working as a documentary photojournalist. The two realized they had a lot in common it and wasn't long before The Image Works was born.

The first decade was a period of growth and definition as the agency established its position as a primary resource for real life editorial imagery. While growth and transition have always been benchmarks for The Image Works, virtually all of the photographers who started filing in the first decade continue to work with the agency today. Perhaps because of the gadget-minded nature of the owners, The Image Works has always been a technological innovator. Early on the business was run with Apple IIe computers and the owners were confident that the 30 lb. 500 Mb hard drive would last for years. Amongst the many Industry Firsts at The Image Works are: bar coding of images (1988), SlideFax- fax transmission of color slides (1989), Digital Archiving of images (1991) and Digital Delivery of Images (1992).

The second decade has seen rapid growth and expansion for the agency and the collection. Capitalizing on its extensive editorial experience, The Image Works has vastly enlarged the scope of the archive to include all editorial material that might be useful to our clients. The past five years have seen especially rapid expansion. The company has taken full advantage of technological advances, investing heavily in cutting edge hardware and software. This extremely flexible and adaptive digital image management system permits rapid addition of new material to the archive while insuring the highest quality standards.

Alan Carey retired from The Image Works in 2001. Mark Antman assumed sole responsibility for the agency as the company president. The Image Works remains 100% independently owned and operated. Guided by its unique vision and philosophy, The Image Works remains committed to providing a uniquely diverse, yet carefully focused archive of the best editorial imagery to be found in the world.
